The coastal town of Noordwijk, situated 40 minutes from the city of Amsterdam, is half cocooned by a natural sand beach that stretches along the shoreline for 13km. This combination of stunning coastline and a consistent westerly breeze thumping the beach makes Noordwijk a popular location for advanced surfers and beginners to tune their surfing techniques. The beaches are never over crowded, even in the summer, so the environment is ideal for beginners to study the basics of the sport. There are no surf punks or surf Nazis in Noordwijk - everyone is welcome to share the famous Noordwijk waves, irrespective of where they come from. And of course, there are no man eating sharks, reefs, rocks or other life-threatening obstacles in the water around Noordwijk, so you can simply chill-out and enjoy yourself.
The best waves of the day occur 2 hours before high tide, generally after 2pm. The most surfer friendly waves are between 1m and 2.5m (3-8ft) in height, big enough to pull off a few tricks, and if you are very lucky you may even catch one of the tubes that we get once in a while.
The Noordwijk beach is always relatively peaceful, but if you fancy avoiding civilization entirely, go out onto the water with your board after sundown for some night surfing!
And the surfing novices amongst you needn’t panic – just talk with us at the Beach Hostel reception and we’ll book you a few surf lessons with a certified instructor from the local surf school.
