Where to go on Queensday 2008?
If you’re in Amsterdam on the 30th of April, you probably planned to do so intentionally. And if you didn’t…well, then you’re in for quite a surprise and orange chaos. But let’s assume for a minute you know what this day is all about, and you want to make the best of this once-in-a-lifetime experience, then we’ve got some hints on where you want to be.
First of all, you need some form of orange. A hat, t-shirt, shoes (even just one), anything goes as long as it’s orange, and the best place to get it is in the Vondelpark. Think of it as one big yard-sale with thousands of people and kids, so perfect for scoring some cheap Queensday goodies.
Traditionally the squares are the places to be, and this year is no exception, with pretty much every one of them having some form of stage with DJ’s & bands performing throughout the day until about 9pm.
On the Leidseplein (1), different acts and bands do their thing on the big stage throughout the day. In front of the American Hotel, famous Jimmy Woo club has DJ’s playing all day. A little up the road (towards central station) is “Dia de la Reina Lationo”, which is all about latin, reggaeton & salsa.
The size of Museumplein (2) makes this the busiest place to be, with a popular radio station hosting many (Dutch) artists…might not sound that inviting, BUT… closing the day is DJ Tiesto!
The Weteringcircuit (3), opposite the Heineken Brewery, is traditionally the domain of DJ café “TWSTd”, and has become known for the great line up of internationally famous DJ’s doing their thing and a constant party & dancing vibe.
The Rembrandtplein (4) will be taken over by the stages of two radio stations. SlamFM’s podium usually turns the square upside down with its parties, and just off the square is 100%NL’s thing, with Dutch music only.
Apart from the big stages on the squares, there are really 100’s of other smaller parties dotted around the city, and we really recommend to just follow the crowd, walk around and soak up the craziness. And oh yeah, B.Y.O.B. is highly advised if you don’t want to stand in line for an hour to get a beer.
Of course we at the Pig will be deck out in the hostels in orange and will have our own little party, so we invite you for a shot of orange bitters to start or finish your crazy Queensday!
Our next issue will be completely redesigned with all parties and events in Amsterdam and the Flying Pig hostels on one page! And don't worry..we will keep your favorite articles!
