King's Day 2015 - What to Expect and Where to Party!
If you're plotting a trip to Amsterdam for King's Day 2015, brace yourselves because April 27 is set to be bigger and better than ever!
Better known at Queen's Day thanks to the many wonderful parties in honour of the then Queen Beatrice, the name might have changed for the new monarch but the party vibe remains the same! On this beautiful Spring day everyone wears Orange in honour of the House of Orange-Nassau (the royals) - so dust off those traffic light party outfits and get ready!
King's Day Parties - From Dawn til' Dusk
Given that it's a public holiday, you can expect to see the Dutch out in force across Amsterdam, enjoying a few (dozen) cheeky drinks at events all over the city. The celebrations normally kick off the night before on the aptly named King's Night, as the carnival rolls into town and just keeps going. Public places like Dam Square become decked out with DJs, the canals along all over Amsterdam brim with brightly coloured boats, and pretty much every cafe you come across will be pumping out tunes onto the city streets. If you're looking for a specific kinda’ party this year, here’s our top picks.
The King's Day Festival at Olympisch Stadion - 12:00 to 21:30: Brace your good selves for multiple stages packing home grown and further flung live acts, and DJs. On the billing this year you've got Dirtcaps, Yellow Claw, Joris Voorn, Girls Love DJs, and Bakermat.
The King Kong Festival - 12:00 - 20:00: Just across the way from Central Station at NDSM-werf and very much worth crossing water for, the King Kong Festival will take over Amsterdam Noord with a bang. Bigger, better and more infamous than the blockbuster monster it’s named after, the 2015 edition of the festival will see HekjeMelRoy and Meubelstukken join forces to blast out the best house, hip hop, pop, disco, and R&B tunes. 2015 headliners include Leroy Styles and Keri Chandler.
The Citywide Markets and Street Sales
For one day a year and one day only, everyone in Amsterdam can set up stall and sell their wares, totally tax free! The vrijmarkt (translation: free market) gives everyone the chance to sell second-hand belongings, freshly made food, crafts and much more - to the orange clad King's Day attendees, bopping their way through the city streets to the party beats. In other words, it's the one of the biggest flea markets on the planet.

King's Day - April 27, 2015: More famously known as Queen's Day , prior to King Willem-Alexander taking the throne, this public holiday is orange all over and renowned across the planet for canal parades, street parties, tax free street stall trading, and fun - throughout the city.
The Tulip Festival - March 31 to April 30, 2015: The Netherlands are world renowned for Tulips and as Spring comes into full bloom, so do these famous flowers. You don't gave to travel out to the fields to see these though because the great city of Amsterdam will be opening up and creating gardens, just for you. Venues taking part include Artis, EYE Filmmuseum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Hortus Botanicus, Museum Van Loon and Rijksmuseum
The Keukenhof Gardens Reopen - March 20 to May 17, 2015: With seven-million bulbs blossoming over 32 hectares, this is one event and location worth taking a day trip for! As the famous gardens reopen, visitors can expect the theme this year to pay tribute to Vincent van Gogh, with special colours grown in mosaic formations to make faces, artwork and then some. Treasure hunts, pavilions, statues, mazes, parades and boat tours will all feature.
Awakenings Easter Special- April 2 to 5, 2015: If you're a fan of techno, you're going to love this. Awakenings is an Amsterdam intuition, kicking off the Easter weekend at the Gashouder in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek. Packing a wicked rave atmosphere, you can expect tunes from Sven Vath, Joris Voorn, Adam Beyer & Joseph Capriati, Speedy J, Function and Ben Klock & Marcel Dettmann.
Liberation Day - May 5, 2015: This date is a national day of celebration marking the end of the German occupation in World War Two. Of the many events organised across Amsterdam and the Netherlands, the Liberation Festival (Bevrijdingsfestival) is the backbone with music aplenty from both Dutch, and international bands.
