The Flying Pig supports...

The Flying Pig proudly supports Build Africa! Together with our mother company Beds and Bars, running hostels and pubs all over Europe and the UK, we raise money through events, sponsored races, merchandise sales and key card donations. This means you as our guest play a great  part in funding Minyalala primary school in Kenya. 

We committed to a long term support of this school, drastically improving the sanitary facilities, classroom conditions, teaching aids, training for teachers and school management, also providing jobs and getting the community involved in the school and convinced that education is important.

The focus will not only be on educating the children from books but also to teach them vital life skills, such as teamwork and leadership, playing sports and being creative. Build Africa works with the local community to begin tackling entrenched beliefs regarding the traditional roles of women and high levels of absenteeism among girls by providing them with sanitary towels, meaning that they do not miss school during their periods, which is often the case in these regions. The children are also involved in a forum about HIV and AIDS, adolescent health and sexuality issues. 

The aim is to support and give the community the skills and resources to keep running the school themselves when ready, by focusing on enabling each school to effectively manage the school, secure the income needed to pay for school’s on-going needs and keep the community involved. We do this by encouraging the school communities to plan for their futures through enterprise, local fundraising and sourcing of local grants. Whether this is through parents joining a Build Africa Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) which is being run in their area, planting crops within the school grounds to sell, approaching local businesses for support, meeting regularly with the local communities, setting up fundraising committees or applying for local funds, each school community is introduced to a variety of methods and are encouraged to think creatively about which solution is most appropriate for them and begin to implement them. We also work to empower school communities to hold local government to account and access their entitled funding. This has already enabled them to increase their incomes by 25%.
